Edward P. Ray, an immigrant from Norway, was a small fruit farmer in New Era, Michigan. He packed raspberries in crates and shipped them to commission houses in Chicago by rail. Perishability of the fruit in hot weather was a constant hazard. To survive, he started a small canning operation in a 22 by 14 shed. That was 1910.

| Today, under the leadership of the fourth generation of the Ray family, New Era Canning Company operates a modern processing facility located on its original site. |
